At-Home Skin Care Tips for Smooth, Radiant Skin

We all want soft, glowing, healthy skin, with lots of elasticity and few wrinkles. Our skin is such a wonderful, important organ. Since it forms the barrier between our “inside” and “outside” worlds, skin comes into contact with many irritants and potential dangers. This is why it’s important to take care of our skin and nourish it daily. While we’re young, the importance of skin care might not be so obvious… But the truth is, the earlier in life you start a thoughtful skin-care regime, the later in life you’ll enjoy healthy, glowing skin. And for those among us who aren’t so young any more, it’s never too late to treat your skin well — Certain skin care interventions can even reverse ageing and damage.

If you’re experiencing skin irritation or disease that’s chronic or severe, it might be time to see a dermatologist. If you’re just looking for some at-home tips for superior skin care, then read on! Here’s a short list of very basic, but very important, ways to treat your skin well.

  • Get enough sleep. When we’re sleep deprived, blood flow decreases, and skin begins to look pale and ashy. Additionally, sleep is the time when skin cells regenerate, and skin is able to heal from the damages of the day. If you miss out on sleep, your skin isn’t as resilient to daily damages, and that leads to craggy, droopy looking skin — and of course those under-eye bags. Get at least 7 hours every night to look and feel your best.
  • Stay hydrated. Water is one of the primary agents in keeping our skin smooth, elastic, and plump. Water clears away the toxins that cause inflammation and discolouration. It’s also the primary agent for delivering oxygen and nutrients to your skin. Drink at least 8 glasses a day to make sure your skin gets all the nutrients it needs.
  • Wear sunscreen. This one is SO important! Even if you don’t spend that much time in the sun, the cumulative impact of short amounts of sun exposure can be damaging. Sun exposure causes premature aging and can even promote skin cancers. Apply a moisturiser with an SPF every day.
  • Eat a nutritious, non-inflammatory diet. Inflammation is one of the primary causes of blemishes, splotchy skin, and other irritations. Avoid foods that cause inflammation, like refined sugar, anything over-processed, and trans fats. Get plenty of good fats, from foods like nuts, avocados, and fish.
  • Moisturise. Maybe this one is a no-brainer, but you should apply a gentle, non-toxic moisturiser to your skin at least once a day. We recommend applying moisturiser to your neck and chest as well.
  • Hands off! We know it’s tempting…but avoid touching your face throughout the day. Touching spreads bacteria that can cause blackheads and inflammation.

These are basic habits that will help keep your body and skin healthy over time. Think of these as skin-care methods for basic nourishment and maintenance. If you do these things regularly beginning in your 20’s, you’re on track to enjoy beautiful skin for decades. If you’re looking for some more aggressive, product-based skin-care — methods to heal and correct previous skin damage – we’ve got a few of those to recommend too.

Treat your skin well, and it will treat you well!
