7 Common beauty myths busted

Between fashion magazines, beauty blogs, and YouTube tutorials, there’s more beauty advice at our fingertips than ever before. Unfortunately, while well-meaning, a lot of it is inaccurate. From believing expensive make-up works best, to spending hundreds of pounds on creams that promise to rid you of cellulite, there are plenty of myths that could be doing your beauty routine more harm than good.

Read on to learn the truth behind some of beauty’s enduring myths.

Expensive products work better than cheaper ones

Expensive skin care products may look attractive, but they’re not always the best, or most effective option, no matter what the glossy magazine ads say. It’s all about what’s in the product. The ingredients in a swanky skincare product and its supermarket counterpart are often pretty much the same. With the former, you may just be paying for the name and fancy packaging.

It’s far more important to check the ingredients and go with what works for your skin type than be swayed by marketing.

You can get rid of cellulite topically

If only. This remains one of the holy grails of cosmetic dermatology. Cellulite consists of fat deposits that get trapped between the fibrous bands connecting the skin’s tissues. The bands squeeze the fat under the skin, resulting in a lumpy texture. Despite claims made in magazines and on TV ads, nothing can be done to permanently eliminate it, including liposuction. And whether you have it or not is most down to lucky genes.

Hypoallergenic products are better for sensitive skin

This term gets thrown around a lot in the beauty industry. It’s meant to suggest that a product is less likely to cause an allergic reaction and therefore better for sensitive skin. However, the term is unregulated and dozens of products with problematic ingredients have jumped on the bandwagon. So, before you spend your hard-earned cash on hypoallergenic products, read the ingredients. Make sure it’s a gentle formula with as many natural ingredients as possible.

You should choose skin care products based on your age

Wrong! Not everybody born in the same decade as you have the same skin type as you. Everyone’s skin is unique, regardless of age, gender or ethnicity.

Choose skin care products based on your skin issues, not your age.

Greasy food causes acne

While it’s not doing your waistline any favours, that greasy meal isn’t what’s causing your acne.

Genetics, oil production, hormones, clogged pores, bacteria, and medications like birth control are the real culprits when it comes to breakouts. However, working around grease, such as in a kitchen, can cause acne because oils can stick to the skin and blocks pores.

Everyone gets age spots when they’re older

The name suggests that age spots synonymous with ageing, but age spots can appear at any time of life. Yes, they’re more common as you advance in years, but they aren’t limited to that stage.

Age spots are a result of prolonged sun exposure, so the more time you spend in it, the more likely you are to develop them. While they aren’t anything to worry about, some people choose to have them lightened or treated by a dermatologist.

All women eventually outgrow acne

Unfortunately, this is a circumstance where men have an advantage over women. Men typically outgrow acne, as their hormone levels even out after puberty. But women’s hormones fluctuate throughout their lives, due to menstrual cycles, pregnancy, menopause and so on.

The bad news is that women can suffer from acne well into their ’20s, ’30s, ’40s and beyond.
